Pain When Urinating Is A Sign Of Pregnancy

For some women, frequent urination can be a sign of pregnancy. However, what if BAK is accompanied by pain whether it is a sign of pregnancy or even a dangerous condition from certain diseases? When pregnant, women will become urinated frequently. This condition is generally normal and can be used as an early sign of pregnancy. Increased frequency of BAK occurs because the body experiences hormonal changes, as well as due to the enlargement of the uterus which suppresses the bladder, causing frequent urination during pregnancy. Meanwhile, to urinate accompanied by pain, although often also experienced by pregnant women, is not a sign of pregnancy. This condition is a sign of symptoms of certain diseases, such as bacterial vaginosis, chlamydia, endometriosis, genital herpes, gonorrhea, trichomoniasis, or urinary tract infections (UTI). Not only pregnant women who can experience pain when urinating, women who are active in sexual intercourse are also at risk of experiencing it.

Causes of Pain When Urinating

Pain during urination can be the most common symptom when you experience a urinary tract infection or UTI. This condition often occurs during pregnancy, because the influence of pregnancy hormones and changes in the size of the uterus that suppresses the bladder can cause discharged urine to be disrupted. Women also have a higher risk of urinary tract infections than men. This is because women's urinary tract is shorter than the male urinary tract. As a result, bacteria from around the anus can easily enter the bladder and then infect it. Not only in the urinary tract, UTIs can also occur when bacteria invade other urinary systems, such as the kidneys, ureters, and bladder (cystitis). Pregnant women, menopausal women, and women who have sexually active are more at risk of developing bladder infections. Signs and symptoms that occur when a urinary tract infection occurs, including:
  • Painful sensation when urinating
  • Feel often want to urinate
  • The color of urine is murky
  • Fever
  • Stinging urine odor
  • Pain in the pelvis and lower abdomen
  • There is blood in the urine
If you experience symptoms of a UTI during pregnancy, immediately consult a doctor to get the right treatment. This needs to be done so that bacteria do not spread to the top and cause kidney infections (pyelonephritis) or cause complications in the fetus.

Prevent Painful Urination

Urinary tract infections can be bad for the fetus, which can cause babies born prematurely, or babies born with low weight. Therefore, urinary tract infections during pregnancy must be treated immediately and prevented as much as possible. The following are some steps to prevent UTI, including:
  • Drink plenty of water.
  • Fill your nutritional intake, such as vitamin C, beta-carotene, and zinc which can strengthen the immune system against infection.
  • Avoid holding your pee, because emptying your bladder can prevent bacteria from multiplying.
  • After urinating or defecating, clean using a tissue or water from front to back (from the vagina to the anus). This aims to prevent the spread of bacteria from the anus into the vagina or into the urinary tract.
  • Avoid foods and drinks that can irritate the bladder, such as spicy foods, artificial sweeteners, alcohol, caffeine, and acidic fruits.
  • Avoid feminine hygiene products in the form of sprays, powders or antiseptic soaps that can irritate your urinary tract and female organs.
  • Keep your urinary clean by changing your underwear every day. In addition, choose cotton underwear and not too tight to prevent the female area from becoming damp.
  • Use condoms when having sex to prevent sexually transmitted diseases.
These simple things can prevent you from avoiding pain during urination caused by UTIs, during pregnancy. However, if you already have a UTI, immediately consult a doctor to get the right treatment. This needs to be done to prevent complications in pregnancy, such as premature babies, underweight babies, premature rupture of amniotic fluid, and preeclampsia.
